Perhaps a nod to Samsung’s corny candybars and Nokia’s wild Earth-friendly hardware, Sony Ericsson has unveiled its GreenHeart concept, a never-destined-for-production handset that incorporates a bunch of green technologies that it’d like to bring to market over the coming years. Most of the GreenHeart’s ideas are totally logical and could be executed today — online user manuals, bioplastic and recycled plastic materials, and a charger that draws just 3.5mW in trickle mode, just to name a few — but the company is shopping around the whole lot of it to customers and “selected partners” to determine which eco-concepts should be implemented for production and in what order. Unfortunately, Sony Ericsson isn’t seeing fit to show any pictures of the GreenHeart right now, which we take to mean it looks like a tree.

This enterprising EOS 40D owner wants a DSLR that records video, too — and he’s taking action. This hack uses CHDK — the free firmware enhancement for Canon PowerShot cameras — and LiveView to capture video to the camera’s CF Card. There are still a few issues: LiveView shuts down after a period of inactivity, video can’t be transfered via USB, and unlike your $79 consumer grade camera, the EOS 40D won’t record audio. But what’s a little challenge in the face of a good camera mod? There’s no word on file format, frame rate or resolution (though the camera’s display weighs in at 320 x 240), but there are lots of other juicy details available once you hit the read link. And be sure to catch the video after the break.

As with Movea’s Gyration Air Music Remote, the company’s latest input peripheral can also work sans a surface. The aptly-named Gyration Air Mouse proudly boasts MotionSense technology that enables it to work both in-air and on desktop, meaning that you really can just wave your mouse around like you just don’t care (and have it do something meaningful). The RF-based unit weighs in at under 4-ounces and is designed with professionals in mind, particularly those turned on by the idea of using the in-air motion tracking to wow clients when showing off that amazingly mundane PowerPoint presentation. It should be out this November for a penny under $100, and you can glance over the full release after the break.

OpenPeak was showing off an Atom-based version of its OpenFrame touchscreen / phone combo at IDF last month, but it’s only just now gotten fully official with it and, naturally, it’s taken the opportunity to dish out some new, prettied-up pictures. Not much looks to have changed with the device itself in the past month or so though, with it still promising to “simplify everyday family and media interactions” and, just as importantly for OpenFrame, “drive new revenues for service providers” — it’ll handle phone calls, too. Unfortunately, while OpenFrame is still saying we can expect to see the first devices based on the platform early next year, it’s apparently not yet ready (or able) to announce exactly who those OEM partners might be.

If you like the Eee PC 901 then you’re going to love this. ASUS just announced an integrated HSUPA option for its 8.9-inch netbook. When coupled with that 7.5-hour (rated) 6-cell battery you’ll have ample time to try and locate a carrier “in many destinations around the world” capable of delivering 7.2Mbps down and 2Mbps up — ASUS doesn’t say but we’re sure it’ll step down to older WWAN coverage as required. Available in October (just missing the September launch rumor) for an undisclosed price on undisclosed frequencies.
[Thanks, Michael A,]

Didn’t see anything that particularly suited your fancy at CEDIA? Then feast your eyes on CEATEC. As the Japan-based trade show hastily approaches, out pops a mind-boggling new home theater package from Panasonic. The system will include one of its marvelous 103-inch plasma HDTVs, a Blu-ray player and at least one set of fancy 3D goggles. Hailed as a world’s first in some form or fashion, the Full HD 3D package utilizes an undisclosed format “employed by major Hollywood film studios” to “distribute full HD images of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels to each eye via synchronized shutter glasses.” Panny is hoping to promote the technology and possibly get a leg up on Samsung (our assumption) by impressing wealthy homeowners and members of the Blu-ray Disc Association. As expected, there’s no mention of a price, but rest assured — you’ll be stuck choosing between this and a new BMW.

Just like gasoline-powered automobiles, the Li-ion-powered DAP is a fading gem. Okay, so maybe that’s grossly inaccurate, but at least it gives us a warm fuzzy feeling to think that Trevor Baylis’ Eco Media Player Revolution has a sizable budding fan base. The follow-up to the smashing Ecodigital wind-up PMP takes on a glossy black motif and features 4GB of built-in storage space, an SD card slot for capacity expansion, an FM tuner and support for a whole litany of audio / video formats. Best of all, you can connect your dead mobile to this thing, give it a few cranks, and boom — your cellie now has enough juice to make one very urgent call for more lunch money. Sure justifies the £129.99 ($241) asking price, huh?

Honda’s been trying for months now to convince you that “the van is back in style,” and while we’re still not entirely sure that line isn’t just marketing hoopla (okay, it is), at least the company is working to make the thing more technologically advanced. Starting next month in Japan, the automaker will debut a multi-view camera system for its Odyssey minivan, which will utilize the same 360-degree overhead cam tech that Nissan picked up last year. The system will give drivers the ability to see more as they prepare to back out, and the biggest boon is the ability to view ninjas adhered to parking garage ceilings prior to opening the sunroof and facing The Reaper. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when it’ll be available in other corners of the globe, but we’d guess 2009 if we had a Katana put to our throat.

We still haven’t been able to shake the ViewSonic dragon from our memory, but we’re attempting to move on with our lives by directing our attention (however briefly) to the N2201w. This so-called “3-in-1″ LCD TV packs a 22-inch 1,680 x 1,050 resolution panel, a 5-millisecond response time, 1,000:1 contrast ratio and a built-in NTSC / ATSC / QAM TV tuner. You’ll also find an integrated DVD player and an HDMI port, and just to prove it really is multifaceted, there’s a PC input to boot. No telling if the picture quality is anything to write home about, but the $429 price tag sure is palatable.

While most folks working to improve on the traditional lie detector have veered towards MRIs, EEGs and the like, Scott Bunce of Drexel University’s College of Medicine has taken a decidedly different approach and turned to an infrared light-based method, which he seems to think would be both less expensive and more accurate. Apparently, the system works simply by sending infrared light into your brain and measuring how much is reflected back, which varies depending on the levels of oxygen in the blood, and in turn gives an indication of brain activity. Not surprisingly, the research appears to have already attracted the interested of some of the usual suspects — namely, the U.S. Office of Naval Research and the Department of Homeland Security, who have provided some of the funding — but it seems like there’s still some more work to be done before it moves beyond the lab. At least as far as we know.
