Why Pacquiao-Cotto didn’t last earlier than 12th

By Francis Ochoa
Philippine Daily Inquirer

LAS VEGAS—Kenny Bayless waved off Saturday’s fight with Manny Pacquiao all over Miguel Cotto, who was trying to escape the Filipino’s fusillade against the ropes.

Should Cotto’s corner have pulled the plug earlier?

Freddie Roach thinks so. So does Manny Pacquiao.

“It’s a good question,” Top Rank chief and fight promoter Bob Arum said, minutes after Pacquiao became the first boxer to win world titles in seven different weight classes after taking Cotto’s WBO welterweight title via a 12th-round technical knockout.

“I know the referee did the right thing in stopping the fight,” Arum added.

Pacquiao said he thought Cotto’s corner would call the fight to a halt in the 11th round. Roach agreed, but said the end should have come earlier.

But before anybody could train their guns at 32-year-old Joe Santiago, who had been vilified for his inexperience in big-time bouts, Cotto owned up to the error.

“I told Joe that I wanted to continue fighting,” said the Puerto Rican star. “It was my decision.”

Roach could have pounced on Cotto’s admission by saying he was right after all. That Santiago wasn’t running the training camp but Cotto.

Roach had been jawing at Santiago in the weeks before the fight, saying the latter simply “put a towel on his shoulder and give his guy a drink and he thinks he’s a trainer.”

Santiago added fuel to the fire when he uttered an invective-laced statement at Roach when Cotto managed to make the weight Friday.

Roach had insisted that Cotto, the former two-division champ, was struggling to make the 145-pound catch weight for the bout.

On Saturday, after Roach guided Pacquiao to a systematic destruction of Cotto, there were no vindictive remarks.

In fact, Roach and Santiago hugged in the middle of the ring after the bout.

Santiago was working in just his second major bout since replacing Evangelista Cotto, the fighter’s uncle, as chief trainer.

A former nutritionist, Santiago had the game plan down pat. But even he was caught unaware by the power Pacquiao brought up with him to the heavier weights.

“We knew Pacquiao had a lot of speed,” said Santiago. “But we didn’t know he could hit hard. He was stronger than we expected.”

Comelec to use blogs to update voters

MANILA, Philippines — Realizing the power of blogging to disseminate information, the Commission on Elections is tapping the Elections Education and Information Department (EID)’s blog (http://bagongbotante.ph/eidblog) to give updates on the ongoing voters’ registration, an official said Wednesday.

“Now that we have the technology available and stable, the Comelec will use the bagongbotante.ph blog website to give voters here and abroad updates about the ongoing registration and at the same time, to gather feedback from voters, especially the youth” said James Jimenez, Comelec spokesman.

Jimenez said the Comelec was aiming to educate the youth on how registration was being conducted in the National Capital Region and to encourage them to register as voters.

“Unlike before when technology is unavailable to us and blogging is a domain for hobbyists and experts, now is the right time — when we have access to technology and blog systems are more stable — to fully utilize the power of blogging to encourage Filipinos to register and exercise their right of suffrage,” said Jimenez.

Through blog articles, pictures and videos, the site offers voters a “feel of the registration process” in respective areas in the National Capital Region, said Jimenez.

Since January 19, three EID staff members have visited different Comelec offices and registration centers and published reports via the blog site. Jimenez said this was part of the EID’s monitoring duties.

“We included pictures and videos to show voters the ongoing registration process. Usually, people do not believe until they see pictures and videos and as with news delivery, this has been the strategy of mass media so we want to keep up with the times,” said Jimenez.

Media and market research firm ACNielsen estimated that the number of Internet users hit 24 million in 2008.

Jimenez added that voters could also post feedback to the Comelec via the comments’ box and shout box or get advice from the poll body about concerns on voter’s ID, registration process, among others.

An upcoming feature on the site will be the e-plaza miranda sub-domain where the Comelec will post information and platforms of candidates for the national elections. Likewise, candidate can write articles about their platforms and how to implement them, if they assume office, said Jimenez.

Jimenez said Filipino voters could comment on the platforms and ask questions to the candidates, enabling online interaction among voters and candidates.

“Since the site can be viewed by anyone with access to the web, this will also be instrumental in updating the .5 million overseas absentee voters, which will vote for national positions in the 2010 elections,” said Jimenez.

Jimenez said other topics on the blog site would include Comelec announcements and voter’s education.

Protect your kid from ‘cyber monsters’

THE Internet, as we all know, has its good and bad side. One downside that should worry parents is pornography.

There are other concerns. Instant Messengers can be used by stalkers or sexual predators. Internet chatrooms like IRC are virtual bar rooms where strangers make “friends” with unsuspecting targets. Social Networking sites such as Friendster and Facebook offer an even bigger threat if your child’s profile contains sensitive information—addresses, contact information or places they often go to.

Online gaming and chatting could be problems, too, since they tend to become vices.

The first type of solution is Parental Control or Internet Filtering Software, installed on a Mac or PC to filter websites. These have been around since the late ’90s and have thus matured to near the complexity of anti-virus software.

Net Nanny (Netnanny.com) is a PC Mag’s Editor’s Choice Awardee, and comes with a plethora of features. You can list sites allowed and not allowed. It also works with popular Search Engines’ “Safe Search” options to ensure kids do not accidentally end up seeing porn.

There are detailed reporting tools: Instant Messaging conversations are logged so you can read them afterward; and you can even manage your home PC remotely from, say, your office. You can limit usage after a preset time, set up profiles for individual users in the household and even limit the type of software, such as games, kids can install.

The downside is that it needs to be installed in each computer, and with households having one PC per person these days, it can be expensive—$28-$70 a pop.

If this is your choice, just Google for “parental control software.” You can download free trial versions and when you’re ready, buy the registration key with credit card over the Internet.

You may already have it

If you are using Windows Vista Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium or Ultimate, you already have Parental Control features that extend from browsing to gaming. After logging in using an account with Administrator privileges, go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Set up Parental Controls.

Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard also has the ability to check websites before they load for content, as well as log instant messengers, websites visited and applications used. There are also time limits to force kids to use the computer within a schedule.

The solution requires the implementation and understanding of “user accounts,” essentially allowing a single computer to have a different “profile” per user. You’ll need a few minutes of study, but it’s well worth the effort, and you’ll get to use underutilized features already paid for.

Block at the source

But what if there are too many computers in the house to tweak, or households with teenagers or older, where a civil war could erupt should you even try to touch their computers?

If your house has a network (with or without WiFi) that allows Internet access to a number of computers at once, you probably own a router. Read the manual and chances are it will have website-blocking functionality among other neat features built in, accessible via your browser and protected by a password.

Finally, there is OpenDNS.com. The least intrusive, most comprehensive and arguably the best solution, offering protection while improving your surfing speed and overall Internet experience as well. OpenDNS is a lot of things, chief of which is a free service that aims to help improve surfing speed.

Since its inception and raving success worldwide, it has added Membership functions which let you tweak your network’s access to your heart’s delight. Website monitoring, which lets you choose categories like “Hate/Discrimination,” “Tasteless,” “Nudity,” and so on, is just one of its many security features, chief of which is the ability to protect everyone in your network from “phishing”—a sophisticated form of criminal activity where users are fooled to think they’re logging in services such as their bank’s to steal their passwords. You cannot protect yourself too much against such things.

What’s best is all users in your network are forced to play within the rules you set, and it’s all free to use. It can be quite overwhelming to learn, however, but there are tutorials and even YouTube videos made by fans of the service to teach you.

The result? Complete peace of mind while you know your kid isn’t surfing where he shouldn’t be, and meeting people he shouldn’t.

Golf club expels De la Paz

MANILA, Philippines—The “golf war” isn’t by any measure over, but the initial inquiry indicated it wasn’t a case of arrogance of power, but a display of hubris.

The board of directors of Valley Golf and Country Club over the weekend cracked the whip on businessman Delfin de la Paz, deciding unanimously after an investigation to expel him as a member for “disorderly conduct in instigating the brawl” a day after Christmas on the rolling course in Antipolo City.

De la Paz’s children Bambee, 18, and Bino, 14, as dependents of an expelled member, were prohibited from the course. Bino, 14, is a member of the Philippine junior golf team, while Bambee is a golf scholar at University of Cincinnati in the United States.

De la Paz’s antagonist, Agrarian Reform Secretary Nasser Pangandaman, also a club member, was suspended for two years.

Although not directly involved in the melee, Pangandaman was sanctioned for the “disorderly conduct” of his guests—his sons Hussein, 30, and Nasser Junior, 27, who is mayor of Masiu town in Lanao del Sur province.

The Pangandaman brothers, who beat up the 56-year-old De la Paz and his son, were “banned for life” from the club’s premises.

“The board agreed that the statements of the witnesses established that Mr. De la Paz started the aggression by hitting Nasser Pagandaman Jr. with an umbrella,” according to the decision by the nine-member body.

“Mr. De la Paz’s conduct was the proximate cause and the spark of the fighting that ensued wherein Nasser and Mohammed Hussein Pangandaman retaliated against Mr. De la Paz,” it said.

The two parties have filed complaints against each other in the prosecutor’s office of Antipolo for child abuse and physical injuries in connection with the Dec. 26 incident.

But even before the De la Paz family went to the prosecutor, an e-mail had been circulated by Bambee recounting how the Masiu mayor in violation of “Etiquette 101” had overtaken the family’s flight on Hole No. 3 without permission and, along with a sibling, went on to beat up her father and brother.

The cyberspace narrative insinuating abuse of power by a member of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s Cabinet has sparked calls for the resignation of Secretary Pangandaman and resulted in critical media comments against him.

Trial by publicity

The Pangandamans claimed in their statements that the mayor, although he arrived late, had pre-registered and was simply catching up with the group; that permission had been sought from the marshal and that De la Paz had been informed.

In spite of this, the Pangandamans said the De la Paz flight fired golf balls in their direction on the fairway without shouting “fore,” endangering an 8-year-old child in their group and triggering the brawl on a tee and in the clubhouse.

Other members of the De la Paz family—reportedly the wife armed with a knife and a burly person carrying a baseball bat—attempted to join the fray that also involved armed bodyguards of the Pangandamans.

“If not for the timely intervention of the club’s security personnel and officers and other persons, the situation may have resulted in further violence and injuries,” the board said in its ruling.

Pangandaman Senior said the club ruling was “a vindication.”

“It confirmed what I have been saying from the very beginning,” he said.

He said that Bambee’s e-mail, widely used in newspaper accounts without the Pangandaman comment, had hurt the family.

“We were tried by publicity, but I know the truth will come out,” the agrarian reform secretary said. “It’s been painful for my family.”

He said his sons would pursue the criminal cases in court.

Ted Pastrana, lawyer of the Pangandamans, said he would use the club findings in the criminal case against the De la Paz family.

De la Paz cries foul

De la Paz called the club decision “unfair” and said he was willing to submit to a lie detector test to refute its findings.

“We were the ones who were mauled twice and yet we were the ones expelled,” De la Paz told the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net). “What’s happening to our world. The truth doesn’t come out.”

He rued that the findings would ruin the career of his son. “He doesn’t seem to want to play any more.”

Mayor Nasser Pangandaman. Jr

DAR chief, son tagged in attack

MANILA, Philippines—The son of Agrarian Reform Secretary Nasser Pangandaman and several persons beat up a 14-year-old boy and his father at a golf course in Antipolo on Friday, the victims complained Saturday.

The alleged attackers were identified as Nasser Pangandaman Jr., mayor of Masiu, Lanao del Sur, and his golfing companions and armed bodyguards. The victims, Delfin de la Paz and his family, said the Agrarian Reform secretary witnessed the incident at the Valley Golf Club but did not stop his son and their bodyguards from attacking the victims.

De la Paz filed the complaint immediately after the incident on Friday with the Antipolo police, who said the charges, including child abuse, would be filed on Monday.

Breach of etiquette

De la Paz said the incident started when the Pangandamans broke golf etiquette by playing out of turn and over-taking the De la Paz family at the South Course of the Valley Golf and Country Club.

In an interview, De la Paz, 56, said he and his two children—daughter Bambee, 18, and son Bino, 14—were playing golf and were on Hole No. 3 when two golf carts bearing the Pangandamans and their friends overtook them.

Aside from the Pangandamans, the group also included Paysal Abdulaa, Mohammed Hussein, Abdan Pacasuna, Rene Maglaque and Arnel Astacio.

Dela Paz said he complained to the marshal and when the two groups caught up with each other at the tee house on hole No. 5, an altercation ensued.

De la Paz said that at the height of the altercation, Nasser Jr. suddenly attacked him and his son, punching and kicking them and shouting: “Hindi mo ba ako nakikilala? (Don’t you know me?)”

Bambee de la Paz, who witnessed everything, said the younger Pangandaman continued to attack even when his brother was already on his knees pleading for him to stop.

Bambee, in an e-mail to friends, said they decided to stop playing and retreated to the clubhouse to seek medical attention, but their attackers followed them there. This time joined by their bodyguards, the Pangandaman group again attacked father and son. Bambee said two of the mayor’s bodyguards even pulled out their guns.

She said that while Secretary Pangandaman did not participate in the attacks, he did not lift a finger to stop his son and his companions from beating the victims. None of the golf club’s security guards and managers tried to stop the beating.

‘Golfers are decent’

Dela Paz’s 14 year-old boy suffered various facial, head and back injuries due to the blows he received.

“This is a golf course. I have been a golfer all my life and I have never seen anything like this,” Bambee said. “And I though golfers were decent people. You would think politicians were decent people. I guess not.”

Bambee and Bino de la Paz are both outstanding junior golfers. Bambee is on vacation from the University of Cincinnati where she is a golf scholar. Bino is one of the top golfers in his age group.

Efforts to reach Secretary Pangandaman for comment yesterday proved fruitless. His cell phone was off. The public information officer of the Department of Agrarian Reform promised to call the Inquirer as soon as he got in touch with the secretary but he had not done so at press time Saturday.
