T-Mobile gets official with Shadow — yep, just Shadow

T-Mobile doesn’t seem too concerned about the fact that there already is a Shadow — it’s the very phone they’re trying to replace here, actually — but whatever, it’s Windows Mobile, it’s HTC, and it’s finally here. The new model thankfully features WiFi and full support for T-Mobile’s UMA-based HotSpot calling service, but spec-wise, it’s kinda the same as the outgoing piece (which possibly explains the carried-over name). On-board you’ll find a 2 megapixel cam with video capture, microSD support up to 8GB, spin wheel navigation, Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard (read: no touch), a QVGA display, and all the myFaves you can handle. It’ll be available in Black Burgundy and White Mint in “the coming weeks.”

Also on-hand — and in — tonight was Sony Ericsson’s newest Walkman set, the W508. LaCie offers up LaCinema Classic multimedia hard drive

Filed Under (Gadgets (Tech)) by animo on 08-01-2009

It may not be Premiere or anything, but LaCie’s LaCinema Classic can still dish media to your HDTV with the best of ‘em. Available in capacities as large as 1TB, the multimedia hard drive weighs in at 33 ounces and promises to upscale your digital media to 1080p over HDMI. Of note, the unit is DivX certified and features a S/PDIF audio output, though it might have trouble handling some of the more exotic formats. It’s up for grabs as we speak starting at $159 for a 500GB version.

iriver's 8GB E100 PMP cleared out for $59

Filed Under (Gadgets (Tech)) by animo on 28-12-2008

The E100 was a little weak for the iriver name, but at $59 for 8GB of PMP deliciousness, it’s hard to resist. Walmart is clearing out the black iteration for $40 off the original price, and while we’d hate to presume and be wrong, we’re hoping this is just a sign that iriver’s gonna go all out at CES ‘09. Bring the heat, baby.

Gigabyte's M528 MID gets unboxed, photographed lots

We’ve already had the pleasure of checking out the Aigo Patriot in its natural habitat, and now we’re finally being treated to the same with its Gigabyte-branded counterpart. The Atom-based MID has been unboxed all official-like over at UMPC Fever, and the photographer didn’t even shy away from snapping a few with the lid off. Have a look yourself in the read link below, but don’t get too attached — so far as we can tell, it’ll cost you a pretty penny to get it imported from a foreign land.

New nanotechnology augments vision, optic blasts not included

Filed Under (Gadgets (Tech)) by animo on 27-12-2008

It wouldn’t be as much of an icebreaker as saying you have a bionic eye, but University of Colorado Hospital’s Jeffrey Olson has developed a procedure for improving eyesight that involves injecting nano-sized semiconductors called “quantum dots” into the retina. These dots stimulate electrical activity in working parts of the eye and slows degradation in the rest, and early tests on rats have been shown to successfully increase perception. Although intended for those with damaged vision, this might be just the thing for watching your neighbors’ HBO from the comforts of your windowsill — hey, we won’t judge you.

First partially-solar-powered cargo ship launches in Japan

Filed Under (Gadgets (Tech)) by animo on 25-12-2008

We’d heard that Nippon Oil and Nippon Yusen were working on a million-dollar solar upgrade for a car freighter called the Auriga Leader back in August, and it looks like things have gone as planned — the cargo ship launched today from Kobe, Japan. The $1.68m project involved the installation of 328 solar panels, which produce 40 kilowatts of power — a measly 0.3 percent of the engine power required to move the 656-foot, 60,000-ton ship when fully loaded with 6,400 cars, but enough for seven percent of the juice required for lighting and other systems. That’s a slow start, but we’ll take what we can get, we suppose — now let’s bolt on some of those new record-high efficiency panels and see what happens.

[Thanks, Yossi]

PS3 teardown: 30% fewer parts, $300 cheaper

Filed Under (Gadgets (Tech)) by animo on 25-12-2008

When the gang at iSuppli first tore open a PlayStation 3 back in November 2006, they pegged the cost to build the $500 model was $805 in materials. Now they’re back and looking inside the $400 version, which they estimate is $448.73 in parts — still a loss leader for the company, but only by about one Ulysses S. Grant this time. The number of components has also dropped from 4,048 to just 2,820, and both the Cell processor and NVIDIA GPU have slimmed down from 90nm to 65nm. They suspect Sony might be able to lower costs and turn a profit sometime in 2009, but while you may be rooting for this generation’s underdog, don’t get your hopes up for a price drop any time soon.

GM promises to deliver Volt on time no matter what

Filed Under (Gadgets (Tech)) by animo on 19-12-2008

Things may not be looking all that great for GM at the moment, but the automaker is vowing to meet its promised launch date for the Volt, even it doesn’t receive the government aid it’s been seeking, and despite the fact that some of the plants that should be making parts for the car are currently closed. According to The Wall Street Journal, while GM isn’t saying specifically how it’ll get the car built on time, it could possibly make it a top-priority project in the event the company’s forced into bankruptcy protection and use what little funding it has left, or it could import the necessary parts from overseas. Needless to say, some folks remain unconvinced, but as AutoblogGreen points out, GM has really gone out on a limb with the Volt, and it can’t exactly afford to start backtracking now.
